Rurality Research Report: Active Lifestyles in South Holland
Research into the effects rural and remote living has on keeping active
HWLincs is pleased to share our latest independent public engagement report, Rurality Research Report 2026. Commissioned by Active Lincolnshire, our team set out to gather a rich, evidence-based understanding of how rurality affects daily life in South Holland, with a particular focus on Sutton Bridge, Long Sutton and Holbeach.
In order for us to authentically represent the lived experience of people living in South Holland, a mixed methods approach was utilised for this research; over 550 people shared their experiences of rural life, via surveys, community conversations, and case study interviews.
Residents should be at the heart of efforts to improve access to opportunities to stay active in rural areas.. The insight gained from this research will be used to inform future policy, service delivery, and investment decisions.
The report outlines clear recommendations to help residents enjoy active and fulfilling lives, including improvements to infrastructure to promote active travel, bringing activities into remote locations, and reductions in participation fees.
